The other day I was at 24 hour fitness working on my health. This year I have a goal to follow a consistent health program so I can complete a 5k run. Over the last fifteen years I have fought with this goal often doing really well for a few weeks and then tapering to nothing and then starting back again. Like everyone else that struggles with setting goals I rationalize every reason why being consistent with my health program is not possible.
'It's too late to drive to the gym'
'I need to spend more hours at work as I have a pressing deadline'
'I am too tired to go to the gym'
'I went last week so that counts'
'I will focus on it tomorrow'
and on and on and on. As I was walking on the treadmill I kept rereading the sign on the wall of 24 hour fitness which states 'Conquer your Goals". My mind started playing tricks as I reread the words over and over again trying to find a way for me to conquer my goals for fitness. Then the words came through but in a different format. I rearranged the word "Goals" to read "Log As".
To meet your goals you have to log as goals. You have to document the things you are doing everyday towards your goal. You have to log and record your small milestones so you can discipline yourself to reach your big goals. Of course I have known that for years but seeing it in this format gave me a new view of things. Every time I consistently write down my goals I achieve 90-95% of those goals.
If I log in my food intake I generally eat healthier. If I log in my health program I stay consistent to the program. So I have now downloaded a free app on my Iphone to monitor my daily food and exercise program. It keeps me honest and disciplined.
This is no different then setting goals for your business or achieving anything of great significance. While everyone wants a short cut - athletes will tell you that there is no shortcut to winning. Winning requires discipline, motivation, and the ability to see things through even when you don't want to show up and work out.
So the next time you are complaining about your situation ask yourself how disciplined you are in trying to achieve your goals. See you at the gym!
